California's Attorney General is suing a Florida company for illegally obtaining and selling cell phone records. KPBS Reporter Erik Anderson has details.
Bill Lockyer accuses the Hollywood Florida based firm of outrageous invasions of cell phone user's privacy. He says DataTrace unlawfully obtained and then sold customer's confidential monthly call records. Lockyer filed the suit in San Diego Superior Court and is seeking $10 million in civil penalties.
Lockyer: "If its known to potential business operators of this shady sort, that they're getting chased, maybe it'll cause them to discontinue the practice, so we hope there'll be a deterrent in these legal actions."
Lockyer's investigators bought the cell phone records of a deputy attorney general from Datatrace for $220. The company is facing similar legal action from Missouri's Attorney General.
