Students at Challenger Middle School in Mira Mesa participated in a panel on immigration reform today. The principal promised the event to students last week in exchange for them not walking out of class. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
Seventh grader Sylvia Rodriguez says she was out the school gate last Tuesday to protest for immigration reform when Principal Lamont Jackson stopped her and about 20 others.
Rodriguez: "We went into the principal's office and he asked us like how we felt and what we think should be done and we decided instead of like disturbing our education and stuff, we could do it in a better way that would really get our point across."
They worked with the principal to create a panel of students with different opinions on immigration reform and invited two professors who specialize in immigration to brief the audience on the latest in Congress.
Students peppered the panel with questions. They had more questions than time allowed.
Seventh grader Rodriguez says the event was a success and hopes it inspires students to write to Congress instead of shout their message to people who don't make decisions. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
