Local labor officials are outraged that more than 200 support staffers working for the San Diego Unified School District have lost their jobs. The education board voted yesterday to cut positions that keep city campuses clean and running smoothly. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has the details.
The jobs include school custodians, lunch servers, landscapers, office clerks and library aides. In all 216 school district positions were eliminated. Half of the jobs were already vacant. Labor spokeswoman Leticia Munguia says the district continues to balance the budget on the backs of the lowest paid workers.
Munguia: "These are the people that ensure our schools are clean, that they're safe, that every window that is broken is fixed, that our children are fed everyday for their breakfast and lunch. When is it going to be enough?"
Board members say the layoffs are part of the budget balancing process. The district hopes to save more than $7 million. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
