Democrat Bob Filner is likely headed back to Washington after defeating Juan Vargas in the race for the democratic nomination in the 51st congressional district. KPBS Reporter Erik Anderson has details.

Bob Filner says he pleased voters in the border district are sending him back to Congress. The incumbent Democrat faced a stiff challenge from former state lawmaker and San Diego city council member Juan Vargas. He was termed out of his office in the state assembly.

Filner is expected to win another seat in congress in November because his district is overwhelmingly democratic. He says it's a shame redistricting by congress has created districts that that are only competitive by one party.
