California's two main gubernatorial candidates came to San Diego Friday, to tout their plans to improve public education. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
Governor Schwarzenegger spoke at one the area's newest high schools, Westview in North County.
He said in addition to making sure students have top-notch teachers and facilities, it's also crucial to have enough school counselors.
The governor says he wants to spend $200 million dollars to add more counselors to California's middle and high schools. The plan would bring the state up to national counseling standards.
Schwarzenegger: "This is a great investment in our students' success. Right now, we don't have nearly enough counselors, so that kids can get the specialized advice that they need, in order to get the help, so they know which direction to go in their life."
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides spoke in San Diego later in the day. He says the governor is copying his proposal to boost school counselors.
