San Diegans rewarded with a bash for cleaning up trash

It's the start of summer today and the warm weather has brought thousands of people to San Diego County beaches in the past week. Along with a lot of people, comes a lot of trash. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

While the day after July 4th is usually the trashiest day of the year on county
beaches, residents can lend a helping hand to clean two beach areas at six o'clock tonight.

Ken David with the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, says the non-profit group plans a couple of special events this evening.

David: Instead of a regular beach cleanup on the weekend and a regular Surfrider meeting we're going to be going down to the beaches of Mission Beach and Oceanside and we're going to combine having a beach party with also a beach cleanup.

David says all cleanup supplies and refreshments are provided free. The Mission Beach event is at Belmont Park, with volunteers meeting on the grass at the south end of the parking lot. The Oceanside celebration and cleaning is on the south side of the Oceanside Pier, meeting on the grass by the parking lot and restrooms.

The San Diego County Fair is offering free fair tickets to the first 200 volunteers at each location. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
