San Diego Gas and Electric officials are asking customers to conserve power as heat and humidity keep their grip on the region. SDG&E spokeswoman Stephanie Donovan says local power usage is expected to creep up to near record levels. The previous peak was set just two years ago.

When it gets hot like this, especially with the additional humidity that makes it feel a lot hotter than it normally does, even hotter than the temperature reading. Its always a good idea to do what you can to conserve.

Donovan says the utility is asking residents to start conserving, before a major power pinch hits. She says developing a conservation mindset NOW, could stave off power shortages later in the summer. State power officials say there's plenty of electricity available today.
