Eighth-grade students who don't pass two of their four core subjects in the San Diego Unified School District may not move onto high school next year. School superintendent Carl Cohn is currently drafting a proposal which calls for that requirement.

Cohn presented the first draft to the school board Tuesday. He says this eight grade promotion policy is necessary so students are fully prepared to succeed when they go to high school. A taskforce has been formed to gauge public opinion on the matter and implement such a policy. Officials say so far a majority of parents are in favor of the plan. Cohn says eighth-grade students who are held back would be sent to remedial classes for a year.
