Jobs for day laborers in Vista have dried up during the last two days since the city began issuing citations to employers who haven't registered. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
Vista's assistant city manager Patrick Johnson says no workers have been hired from the site since the city began enforcing the ordinance Monday morning. The measure requires employers who want to hire day laborers to register with the city and provide workers with the terms of the job in writing.
Johnson says the number of laborers at the site is also down.
Johnson: "Over the last month, there's probably an average of sixty people a day. Over the last three or four days, that number is down to about thirty or forty."
Critics say the measure is a backhanded attempt to drive day laborers from Vista. Johnson says it's too soon to say if that's happening. He says the city's intent is to protect day laborers.
So far, 15 employers have registered with the city. No citations have been issued. Amy Isackson, KPBS News.
