Journalists expose themselves to many risks in covering the news. They can face physical harm in covering crime, storms, war and investigative stories. They may also face legal battles in protecting sources or notes. Worldwide, 47 journalists were killed in 2005 while doing their jobs – one of the highest death tolls in the last 10 years. In 2005, 125 journalists were imprisoned. Increased pressures and risks on journalists can have a chilling effect on news gathering.
