By all accounts, our earth is changing rapidly. Some environmentalists predict we could lose half of all species on the planet in the next 50 years. The globe is warming at an alarming rate - with some of the hottest years on record occurring in the last decade. The Navy forecasts by mid-century, the Arctic Ocean will be ice-free in summer. Climate change, deforestation and biodiversity loss can all seem overwhelming. He is the new director of UCSD’s Environment and Sustainability Initiative.

The still conceptual initiative aims to put scientific knowledge into action. It will approach the earth’s most pressing environmental issues – global warming, deforestation, biodiversity loss – in an effort to influence government policy and industry for a more sustainable future. Reporter Rebecca Tolin asks Dr. Kennel why academic institutions must be part of a practical solution.
