Congressman Hunter Reacts to Rumsfeld's Resignation

Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter says it was a mistake for Donald Rumsfeld to resign. But the San Diego lawmaker offered lavish praise for the former defense secretary. KPBS Radio’s Andrew Phelps has more.

Hunter says the Bush administration may be rushing too quickly to change leadership in the Iraq war – just because the Democrats took control of Congress.

Hunter: I was surprised at the timing of this resignation. I think it’s a mistake to move on the eve of elections before the dust settles and take immediate actions that have strategic and tactical implications.

Hunter recognizes Rumsfeld has ruffled lots of feathers in Washington. The congressman thinks the defense secretary’s job has become too political. Hunter praised Rumsfeld for taking a torrent of personal barbs while managing a war. The Democratic sweep on Election Day means Hunter’s own role in the Iraq war is changing. He will lose his seat as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. For KPBS, I’m Andrew Phelps.
