Local College Program Aims to Fill the Shortage of Manufacturing Workers

A San Diego community college is training workers to get the skills they need to land a job in a much more demanding manufacturing industry. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

The Manufacturing Engineering Technology program at San Diego City College is the first of its kind in California. It was developed in response to a shortage of skilled manufacturing workers, those people who have computer, math and technical skills.

Program director Truc Ngo says young people don’t realize manufacturing jobs are more specialized than ever before.

Ngo: They think of manufacturing in the traditional way, as like hard labor, manual work. So that's why they’re not interested going into the field. But that's not the case anymore.

Nog says repetitive, less-skilled manufacturing work is going oversees. She says the program trains students to master a handful of technical and engineering skills, and to develop strong communication skills. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
