California has a new fuel standard to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The law aims to reduce the carbon content of gasoline sold in the state. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has details.

California’s new law aims to clean up carbon emissions from tailpipes. Carbon is a major greenhouse gas linked to global warming. The state hopes the low carbon fuel standard will spur investment in cleaner-burning fuels. Phil Flynn is an energy trader with Chicago-based Alaron Trading. Flynn says the new rules could lead to national standards to reduce emissions.

Flynn: Everybody basically knows we’re moving in that direction. The longest journey begins with the first step and I think this is eventually going to take off in the rest of the country.”

California’s new law gives petroleum refiners and gas stations 13 years to reduce carbon by 10-percent. Reducing carbon in fuel is part of the state’s strategy to cut California’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
