Mayor Jerry Sanders Discusses the State of the City
Tom Fudge: Last year, a new kind of San Diego mayor stepped to the podium in City Hall to deliver his state of the city address. Jerry Sanders had just won a special election. He was the first modern San Diego mayor to have strong-mayor powers. And he looked forward to confronting the city’s enormous financial problems.
This month, Sanders delivered his second State of the City address. He was a year older and much better versed in the depth and scope of the challenges facing him. He admitted as much, saying San Diego’s problems were more severe and more complex than he anticipated. Yet he expressed optimism for the future.
