CA Attorney General Holds Hearing on Sale of Paradise Hospital

The California Attorney General will hold a hearing in National City tomorrow on the proposed sale of Paradise Valley Hospital. Some doctors and community members say the sale of the hospital to a for-profit company would be a mistake. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.

The proposed buyer of Paradise Valley is a privately held company called Prime Healthcare. The firm says it has a history of turning around struggling hospitals. A high percentage of Paradise Valley’s patients are uninsured. The hospital has lost millions of dollars.

Dr. John Videen is the director of Paradise Valley’s intensive care unit. He thinks a for-profit model isn’t a good fit.

Videen: This is not a very rich community. I don’t think there’s a lot of money to be made off of the people in National City. So I do have a concern that a for-profit hospital is not in the best interest of the community.”

California Attorney General Jerry Brown is expected to decide next month whether to approve the proposed sale. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
