A new Web site is available to compare quality ratings of more than 200 hospitals statewide. Designers of the site say it offers the most comprehensive hospital information on the Internet. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.
The website is called calhospitalcompare.org. It rates hospitals based on 50 different performance indicators, including heart bypass surgery outcomes. Patient satisfaction is also factored in. Consumers can type in their city or county, and compare up to five hospitals at the same time. Dr. R. Adams Dudley, with UC San Francisco, helped put the website together.
Dudley: Right now, people don't realize there are major differences among hospitals, or maybe they even think, oh well, I went to a hospital for one particular thing, and therefore they'll be good for everything. And we found, actually, that there isn't any hospital that's good at everything."
