Hefty Fines for Mini-Dorm Residents who Disrupt Neighbors

San Diego State students who live in so-called mini dorms will be slapped with a hefty fine if they disturb their neighbors. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

A mini dorm is single-family home that's been transformed to house a handful of people. Beginning next month, police can fine students living in the homes one-thousand dollars if they're being loud and rowdy. Officials say they receive hundreds of noise complaints every year linked to students living in mini dorms. Mid-City police captain Guy Swanger says the hefty fine will be effective.

Swanger: Our officers only had the ability to issue misdemeanor citation to the person who was hosting the party or lived at that particular place. Now everybody that lives there is responsible for what goes on, so it's a different tactic for us.

Mini dorm property owners will also be slapped with a $1,000 fine under the plan. The news comes at the same time the San Diego City Council considers a proposal to tighten controls on mini dorms. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
