Police and the FBI say a violent threat targeting San Diego State is a hoax. Officers say they've detained a suspect who so far has no obvious ties to the university. That person threatened to commit an act of violence similar to what happened to Virginia Tech. Police spokesman Robert McManus says they hope to dispel any fears on campus.
McManus : The threat is a hoax, and I cannot emphasize that enough. There is no credibility to this threat. The university police department is still active, out in the field, we will continue to do what we feel is necessary, to provide a safe environment for this educational institution.
Police say the threat came in late last night. They did not alert or call for a lockdown at that point. Officers determined the threat a hoax early this morning shortly before scheduled classes. A campus-wide email was sent shortly before noon today.
