In 2006, Value of San Diego Crops Fell For First Time in 13 Years

The value of crops grown in San Diego County dropped by about 4.5 percent in 2006.  It's the first time that's happened in 13 years. The San Diego County Department of Agriculture tracks the county's fifth largest economic sector.

The Department's Marcia Milam says the decline isn't a big concern for county officials.

Milam : Part of the problem is that, especially with avocados, which is one of our major crops grown here in the county, we over-reported. And so it made the decrease kinda seem that much more significant.

San Diego's nursery business accounts for about a billion dollars worth of economic activity. All other agricultural products are worth just over $460 million. The county has 47 different crops valued at more than a million dollars.
