Sanders: New Red Tape Would Prevent Sunroad-Esque Breaches

San Diego's mayor says he has a plan to prevent another, quote, "catastrophe" like the Sunroad Enterprises scandal. Developers must now get permission from the FAA to build near city airports. KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps has details.

Jerry Sanders says serious communication breakdowns let Sunroad build a tower that's too tall by federal aviation standards. The building is close to Montgomery Field. The FAA says it could disrupt planes trying to land in bad weather.

Sanders says developers must now get FAA approval to expand any building within four miles of an airport. City officials are getting special training on FAA safety rules. And they'll have to “red-flag” any projects that could break those rules.

The mayor's edict came down within hours of the departure of Marcella Escobar-Eck, a key figure in the Sunroad affair. Her replacement has already been named.
