State lawmakers, professors and students are urging the governor to sign legislation that would reform higher education in California. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
One of the bills would make the University of California Regents and the California State University Trustees vote on executive pay hikes in an open meeting so the public can weigh in. It would also require board members at both systems to provide a breakdown on any proposed compensation package.
Senator Leland Yee authored the bill. He says right now the regents and trustees are raising student fees and asking for more state funding to cover pay hikes approved behind closed doors.
Yee : These kinds of behaviors have got to stop. The board of trustees cannot continue to operate without any controls whatsoever.
The governor is also considering a measure that would require all CSU executives who are paid to teach a class actually perform the work they are paid to do.
