City of San Diego officials say recycling Christmas trees extends the life of the Miramar landfill. The city's tree recycling program begins today. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
City of San Diego recycling specialist John Theroux says the Miramar landfill is due to fill up in four years.
Theroux: So anything that we can do to keep material out of the landfill is a good thing. you know Chrismas trees end up making nice mulch or compost so there's really a lot of use for the material.
People with yard waste recycling collection at their homes can leave their trees on the curb. Also, 17 drop off sites are open around the city during daylight hours through January 23rd.
Theroux says the city recycled 140,000 trees last year into 1,100 tons of compost.
He says the compost is available year round and is free to city residents who load it themselves.
