The State of the City: Economy Improving, Local Elections Looming

Tom Fudge: This evening Mayor Jerry Sanders gives his 2008 State of the City address in the newly renovated Balboa Theater. This will be the third State of the City Sanders has delivered since he was elected mayor in a special election in 2005. His earlier addresses were fraught with anxiety about the difficult financial state of the city. Today, the huge pension deficit has not gone away but it has shrunk a bit, and Jerry Sanders is running for re-election this year. Will those things have an impact on the message he can be expected to deliver?

The mayor’s annual State of the City address will take place tonight at 6 p.m. in the newly renovated Balboa Theater. A taped webcast of the speech will be available at 8 p.m. on City TV channel 24.
