San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders says that the city recycled 55 percent of its garbage in 2006. That's up three percent from the previous year. Reporter David Nogueras has that story.
Much of the work gets done here, at Allan Company Recycling near the Miramar Landfill.
Mayor Jerry Sanders says by keeping glass, metal and plastic out of the dump, this facility helped San Diego exceed the California recycling mandate of 50 percent. Sanders says, in the long term it will save the city money.
Sanders : Keeping waste out of our landfills will extend their lifespan and help us postpone the expensive effort to find new disposal options for our solid waste.
But increased recycling won't buy much time for the city. The Miramar dump is expected to reach its capacity four years from now.
When it does, the city will have to either build a new site or pay others to take the city's garbage.
