Tom Fudge: Today, if you were planning to take a six-pack to Torrey Pines State Beach , just south of Del Mar, you need to change your plans. That's because today is the first day of a year-long ban on the use of alcohol on that beach. If this sounds familiar, that's because at the end of last year San Diego imposed a year-long pilot ban on drinking on its beaches.
Torrey Pines is overseen by the State Parks Department , and the people who run the place were concerned that Torrey Pines could become more and more of a destination for people who want to drink in the sand. Is this latest move, by the State Parks, another indication that San Diego is headed toward banning booze on the beach up and down its coast?
