Violent crime continues to decline in San Diego County. However the latest regional crime statistics shows a troubling trend in robberies . KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
Most crimes are on the decline since a peak in the early 1990s. The good news is that violent crime, including homicides, fell in the county as a whole in the last year. However robberies have increased for the fifth year in a row.
Dr. Cynthia Burke is with the
San Diego Association of Governments
. SANDAG produces the regional crime statistics for all 18 cities and the unincorporated areas of San Diego County.
Burke: Even though there was almost 4,400 robberies last year, it's still, when you look at San Diego in the early 1990s when there was almost 9,000, how much safer we really are than we were ten to 15 years ago.
About half the robberies happened outside in a public place. Fewer homes were burglarized, though one in every 114 households county-wide was burgled last year. Almost half of those burglaries involved no forced entry, which police say is a reminder to lock up!
