Schwarzenegger Administration Pledges to Fight Proposed EPA Regulation

California may end up taking the federal government to court once again. The Schwarzenegger Administration is pledging to fight a federal proposal that would prevent the state from regulating greenhouse gas emissions from cars. From Sacramento, Marianne Russ reports.

On Earth Day the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released a proposal to raise fuel-economy standards.  Deep in the 400-plus page document was a section barring states from setting their own tailpipe emissions standards.

California Air Resources Board Chair Mary Nichols calls it a time bomb:

Nichols: I cannot say too strongly how this is disappointing and frankly beyond even what we had thought possible from this administration.

Nichols says California will sue if necessary, but right now it's only a proposal, so the administration will fight to have that language removed.  California already has a case pending against the U.S. EPA for denying the state a waiver so that it can enforce its own stricter auto emissions standards.
