Aftermarket tinted windows will be illegal in Tijuana starting Sunday. The new law is another measure the city is using to crack down on organized crime. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story from Tijuana.
Drive down most any street in Tijuana and you see vehicles with windows tinted so dark you can't out who's inside. Tijuana’s legal advisor, Raul Corona Sesma, says that’s been “in-style” for some people for awhile.
Corona says the problem is organized crime groups use the windows to move around the city, hiding their faces and their guns. Starting Sunday, the fine for driving with after market tinted windows is $50.
Many police in Tijuana drive vehicles with dark windows. However, it's not clear how the sanction will apply to them.
Municipal Police officials in charge of enforcing the law say their agency will comply. But, it's not clear if they'll cite state or federal police for violating the law.
Police officials say tourists will be fined. This is at least the second time the city has tried to crackdown on tinted windows.
