California Universities Set to Approve Big Tuition Hikes

California's two public university systems are getting ready to approve a hefty round of student fee hikes this week. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

The governing boards of the University of California and Cal State systems say the Governor's proposed budget cuts are forcing them to act.

UC students could be the hardest hit. Their fees might go up increase by 7.4 percent. Students could pay close to $500 more  this fall, pushing their bill to roughly seven-thousand dollars.

The UC's Ricardo Vazquez say the regents might also approve a mid-year fee increase.

Vazquez: We don't know what's going to happen to the state budget so the regents would need that flexibility were there to be a dramatic, let's say, worsening of the state budget.

Meanwhile, the Cal State system is set to approve a 10 percent fee hike. Students would pay close to 280 more dollars next fall, brining the total there to three-thousand dollars a year.

UC and Cal State students are expected to rally against the increases at both of the governing board meetings.
