A Baja California State Police Investigator is seeking asylum in San Diego. Mexican law enforcement officials say the officer is under investigation in connection with a drug cartel in Tijuana shootout that claimed 14 lives. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
State police agent Eduardo Logan Rojas was reported missing late last April after the bloody shootout between warring members of Tijuana’s Arellano Felix drug cartel.
A Baja California law enforcement official who would not give his name because he’s not authorized to speak to the media says Logan surfaced on Sunday at the San Ysidro Port of Entry to claim political asylum.
The official says Logan is under federal investigation in Mexico in connection with the shootout. His patrol car was discovered abandoned at the scene. He had three gunshot wounds to his leg.
The Baja California law enforcement official says Mexican authorities have passed that information onto U.S. asylum officers in San Diego. Those U.S. officers could not be reached for comment.
Three high ranking police officials have claimed asylum recently in other border towns as more police have been killed in Mexico’s war on drug cartels.
