There will be a brand new face on the San Diego Unified School Board. Richard Barrera the only candidate who ran for District D -- secured his seat on the panel last night.
Barrera replaces Luis Acle who has been the District D school board member for the past four years. The district includes communities like Encanto, Golden Hill and North Park. Acle attempted to seek re-election but failed to get enough signatures to qualify.
Barrera is a community organizer who works for United Healthcare Workers. He comes from an immigrant family and grew-up in El Cajon.
Barrera: The public school system for our family has always been that path to not just to a bright future, but to a sense that we really belong here and that we can contribute here. And we have to make sure that the public school system continues to be that for families that are coming in.
Barrera has three kids and has been involved with the governing board of a local charter school. One issue he wants to tackle is the district's persistent dropout rate.
