Safety Review Ordered Over Firefighter Injuries

A rash of firefighter injuries has prompted California fire officials to order a safety review. That's because the drought has created some rough fire conditions. From Sacramento, Jenny O'Mara reports.

State firefighters have been told to put off things like routine maintenance work to review safety practices. Nearly 17,000 firefighters must go over life saving procedures like making sure they have 2 escape routes.  Cal Fire Spokesman Daniel Berlant says the number of firefighters hurt this season is unusually high. He cites at least a half-dozen burn injuries to firefighters over 2 days earlier this month during fires in Sacramento, Placer and Butte counties.

Berlant:  "But we're seeing fire behavior we would see in late August. So if we're already having the injuries now, we're already seeing the conditions now, we're definitely concerned about what is ahead of us."

Berlant says the dry conditions combined with wind sometimes create out of control fires that can overwhelm firefighters.
