State Budget Deadlock Ongoing; No Compromise in Sight

Tom Fudge: Who says California state government can't get anything done?Last week, the governor and the Legislature agreed to ban trans fats from restaurants and bakeries. They just can't seem to agree on how to pay for anything.

The state faces an $15 billion budget deficit. The Democrats want to raise taxes. The Republicans want to cut the budget, though they have yet to say what should be cut. The GOP is in the minority, and it has been for years in our state. But California is one of a few states that requires a two-thirds majority to pass a budget or to raise taxes. So, Republicans can and do hold up the budget approval. Typically, this goes on until into September, and this seems to be a typical year.
