Numerous breeches in patient privacy at UCLA Medical Center are prompting a new piece of legislation from state lawmakers. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
The measure would impose fines of up to 250-thousand dollars on healthcare workers who illegally accessed patients' medical records. Hospitals where the breeches occurred could also face hefty penalties.
Steve Escoboza heads up the Hospital Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties.
Steve Escoboza : Hospitals are going to have to redouble their efforts to assure that their employees are trained and are following these compliance requirements in the law, whether it be at the federal or state level.
Escoboza say he's not aware of any privacy lapses in San Diego hospitals. A state report found hundreds of recent violations at UCLA Medical Center.
