High Tech High Leader Heads to DNC

The CEO of San Diego's High Tech High charter school group heads to the Democratic National Convention this weekend to talk about education reform. Organizers say the discussion will help shape the education agenda of presidential hopeful Barack Obama. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

High Tech High C-E-O Larry Rosenstock will take part in a forum called Challenge for Change. He joins a long list of notable leaders on education including the Reverend Al Sharpton of the Education Equality Project and Joel Klein of the New York City Public School District.

Rosenstock has made a name for himself in national education circles because he leads one of the most successful charter organizations.

He says education has been pushed aside in favor of talk about the economy and the war in Iraq.

He wants to see a new push for innovative public schools across the country.

Rosenstock: I'm a strong believer in moving away from monolithic solutions. I think we need places like High Tech High and we need places like other types of schools that are differentiated from the norm in terms of practices. And we don't see enough of those.

Rosenstock says the biggest problems in education today are the lack of federal funding for education research, not enough schools embrace technology, and too many schools are segregated based on social class.
