The San Diego city council got an earful from citizens demanding changes in the way the city oversees its development corporations. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
The Council approved the mayor’s recommendation to reappoint 3 downtown development corporation board members.
Speaker after speaker stood up to say the corporation’s boards are overpopulated with people who have development interests at heart, rather than the public’s. CCDC is undergoing an audit, after its president resigned amidst charges of conflicts of interest.
Council member Donna Frye was the lone vote against the reappointments.
Frye: Simply saying let's appoint the same people doesn’t serve the public. They don’t trust the leadership, they want to see more oversight.
Councilman Kevin Faulconer says his audit committee will consider those issues later.
Faulconer: on what is the appropriate role of these groups and organizations, how should they fit into the redevelopment agency, and what do we need to change.
Next week, the audit committee will get the results of the mayor’s investigation into another city development corporation, the SEDC. Its president has also resigned under a cloud.
