As Hurricane Ike heads towards Texas, the state of California is sending help. The Governor's Office of Emergency Services has sent more than 300 emergency responders to Texas to help officials there prepare for the hurricane. Kelly Huston is the deputy director of the state agency. He says many of those sent were already in the region.
Huston: We have eight swift water rescue teams, we have three right now which are urban search and rescue teams, and then folks from the National Guard and then some of our emergency management personnel. They've already been there for Gustav, now they're waiting for Ike. They're on an extended deployment."
California has also sent state and local firefighters, as well as two helicopters and C-130 aircraft from the National Guard. Ike is currently a category two hurricane with winds up to 100 miles per hour. It is expected to hit Texas's gulf coast near Corpus Christi sometime early Saturday morning.
