No More Texting Behind Wheel

You can add text messaging to the list of things you can't do behind the wheel in California. Marianne Russ reports.

Governor Schwarzenegger has signed a bill into law that bans the use of text messaging devices while driving. In a statement, the Governor said it would keep drivers' hands on the wheel, and make the roadways safer.

Under the bill by Democratic Senator Joe Simitian a first offense would earn you a 20 dollar fine, subsequent violations would cost $50.

It goes into effect in January. This is the latest law aimed at keeping motorists from being distracted. In July, a law outlawing the use of hand-held cell phones while driving went into effect.

Governor Schwarzenegger signed a few other bills Wednesday. One is aimed at expanding the number of charter schools in California. Another prohibits companies with business operations in Sudan from bidding on state contracts for goods and services.
