Money for Mission Bay Park Improvements

San Diego City voters decide next month how much of the money generated by Mission Bay Park leases should be spent on park improvements. KPBS Environmental Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

The City of San Diego gets about $30 million a year from leasing land to SeaWorld, hotels and other businesses in Mission Bay Park.

The original plan had that money going back into the park for improvements and maintenance but that hasn't happened.

And Councilmembers Donna Frye and Kevin Faulconer hopes this proposition changes that.

They want to keep the money from being siphoned off into the city's general fund.

The charter amendment on next month's ballot would require more of the money be spent on specific projects within Mission Bay Park.

Don Steele is a former city parks and recreation department employee.

He says changing the charter isn't the way to do it.

Steele:
It really is not good financial management especially at the level of a city charter section.

He says instead of a charter change, the Mayor and the City Council should do their job and use the money for the park.
