San Diego city’s budget committee got a full picture this morning of how the bad financial news is hitting the city’s bottom line. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
The city of San Diego will have to find ways to cut $43 million before the end of the fiscal year.
Chief Operating Officer Jay Goldstone says property, sales and tourist tax revenues will fall short by $35 million, and unavoidable revenue increases are up $8 million.
Goldstone: You may see recommendations to close facilities, modify hours of operations, and we need permanent fixes, permanent reductions, because we’ve got the problem going on into the next fiscal year.
The mayor has already asked for a hiring freeze and the council’s budge analyst suggests freezing travel and equipment purchases, plus starting work furloughs.
All departments, including police and fire, are being asked to identify 10 percent budget cuts.
The full council will decide what to cut next month.
