Community members around San Diego plan protests this weekend outside the 7 libraries slated for closure under the city of San Diego’s proposed budget cuts.
The city is trying to close a $43 million budget gap. The library closures would save $2 million
Valerie Matthews, a resident of Allied Gardens, says she has collected one thousand and sixty signatures in support of her local library, the Benjamin Library.
Matthews : This is a perfectly lovely little library. It’s used extensively by children, by senior citizens like myself who don’t even own a computer. They are trying to sneak this though with less than two weeks public notice, before the new city council takes office.
The San Diego city council will vote on the mayor’s proposed budget cuts on Monday.
The council will consider the option of delaying the library cuts for 6 months until a comprehensive library plan is done.
