San Diego civic leaders are struggling to find a way to expand Lindbergh Field, without building a new multi-story concrete parking garage on the edge of San Diego Bay.
KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
Consultants told civic leaders at an Ad Hoc Airport Committee meeting today that traffic gridlock on downtown streets will be avoided if passenger check-in is moved to the north side of Lindbergh Field.
San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders chairs the group .
Sanders : "We’re talking about a large intermodal transit facility that allows people to get right off the freeway, right over to the parking lot and take a shuttle over to the airport which reduces traffic congestion on all of the streets significantly."
The proposal is to have the Transit Center built near the rail line and Interstate 5 by the year 2015.
But ten new gates have already been approved for the south side next to San Diego Bay. Airport officials are concerned about how those will function without a new multi -story parking garage on Harbor Drive.
The Ad Hoc Airport Committee will have a final proposal by the end of January.
