San Diego city council is considering a new proposal in the ongoing legal battle over the seals living in La Jolla’s Children’s pool. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
Advocates who want to keep the seals in La Jolla are fighting a court ruling that requires the city to dredge the beach and turn it back into a swimming area for children.
Dorota Valli is with Animal Protection and Rescue League. She says State Senator Christine Kehoe has agreed to write legislation that would slightly change the wording of the 1931 state tidelands grant.
Valli : "It would be enough to add three words to the 937 chapter - “marine mammal habitat” - as a permissible use "
Senator Kehoe says she’s ready to write state legislation to help the city resolve the issue, which she remembers from her days on San Diego city council a decade ago.
But she wants the Council and the Mayor to agree on what they want to do, before she writes it.
Kehoe : "It’s more important for me to have local consensus than to beat the clock on the bill deadline."
The council will consider the legal options in closed session today.
