Maureen Cavanaugh : The city of Escondido, like other cities around the county, is struggling with budget cuts and decreasing revenues. City councilmembers are being asked to make some hard choices.

But there is also something very different about the Escondido city council this year. The balance of power has shifted away from a conservative majority, whose focus was on fighting illegal immigration.

With the election in November of my guest , councilwoman Olga Diaz, Escondidio voters approved the first Hispanic member of their city council and put the balance of power in the hands of the more liberal members of the five-person council.
