San Diego County's largest scholarship foundation is being flooded with applications from students in need of college aid this year. But officials say there's less money to go around. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

The San Diego Foundation hands out millions of dollars in scholarships every year to financially needy students.

But this year a record-number of high school grads are clamouring for the aid.

Arzo Mansury is the foundation's director of scholarships. She says public colleges and universities are scaling back on financial aid just when the parents of these students are falling on tough times.

Mansury : Overwhelmingly we are seeing students writing and telling us either one or both of their parents have lost their jobs, or that their homes are in forecllsures, medical bills are piling up. It just seems to be one thing after another.

Mansury says the demand also comes at a time when scholarship donations are shrinking.

But the foundation has set a goal of raising four million dollars in scholarship money to meet that need.
