It's going to be a different summer for students assigned to summer school in the San Diego Unified School District this year. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
San Diego school officials are gearing-up for a new and improved summer school program.
School officials say they're viewing summer school as a continuation of the regular school year for struggling students. Right now they're redesigning the curriculum so students focus their time, meet standards and past tests.
The district's Chuck Morris says students will no longer show up for seat time.
Morris: Too often, summer school in the past has been with just, repeating what they did at the beginning of the previous year. But we don't really determine what the kids and the students need to make summer school meaningful. Its all about making summer school is meaningful.
Morris says want up to 30,000 struggling students to take part. He says the district plans to use federal economic stimulus money for the overhaul.
