San Diego Assemblywoman Lori Saldaña says the economy dominated an open house she held last night. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce tells why the legislator is now changing plans for a town hall in May.
The event was designed as a social affair, but Saldaña says most of the 200 people didn't show up for cake and other refreshments.
"They came because they're really struggling," Saldaña said. "And It just reminded me of how desperate so many people are with the economy and the cutbacks to social services and health care."
Because of the first-hand stories she heard last night, Saldaña says a town hall event in San Diego on the state budget in May will be changed.
"So what I'm telling my staff is, I don't think people need to hear the news, I think they understand how bad the budget is," she said. "What they need is help and services so let's provide that."
Saldaña says the May event will offer help and services to people in need.
