Military prosecutors say alleged murderer Lance Cpl. Darren Evans beat Lance Cpl. Mario Arias to death with a crowbar after a night of drinking, according to the North County Times. The gruesome details were revealed at Evans' Article 32 hearing yesterday, the first court appearance for the accused.
Camp Pendleton Patch reported several Marines testified at the hearing that they believed Evans had a drinking problem and was depressed to the point of being suicidal.
According to Camp Pendleton Patch, Lance Cpl. Steven D. Strine testified he found Evans in a disorderly state two days before Arias' murder:
Witnesses at the hearing said that a broken heart may have triggered Evans' depression.
According to the U-T San Diego, Lance Cpl. James Hogness testified that murder victim Arias picked Evans as his roommate because no other Marine would room with Evans:
