Hospital Expansion To Create More Access To Mental Health Treatment In San Diego

Hospital Expansion To Create More Access To Mental Health Treatment In San Diego
San Diego's mental health treatment capacity will expand, thanks to a renovation of the area's oldest behavioral health facility.

San Diego County's largest and oldest private mental health facility is getting a major upgrade. It will lead to more expanded services in the region.

The $12.5 million expansion of Sharp Mesa Vista will feature a new older-adult unit. This will help serve the growing number of seniors affected by Alzheimer's disease, depression and substance abuse.

It will also enhance the facility's therapeutic gardens. Experts said the environment plays an important role in the healing process.

Sharp Mesa Vista CEO Kathi Lencioni said the renovation will create more capacity to treat people on an outpatient basis.

"We can help manage their medications, we can provide them with tools to help them deal with their mental illness, which will hopefully give them a meaningful life," Lencioni explained.

Sharp Mesa Vista is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The expansion should be completed next fall.
